Creepwyrm (Wyrms of Nyrus)

From SNAZpedia

"Time to give everyone I know and love some [Subnautica] PTSD" - Modrome, 2024

The Creepwyrm is a worm-type Nyral Wyrm in Wyrms of Nyrus. They are the largest mob so far in the mod, considered to be a mini-boss, and by far the most advanced mob in the technical side of the mod.

The Creepwyrm, with at least 6 segments visible. The real scale of this mob is at 21 segments, including the head.

Spawning

Creepwyrms spawn rarely in invasion stages 3 and beyond. They always spawn with a warning sound, and a minute later, start to spawn underground in waves.

Abilities

Creepwyrms are worm entities with one head and multiple sections following it. These segments do considerable damage, but the head will instantly kill entities (including players) upon contact. This, combined with their ability to burrow underground and burst out of the ground in unpredictable ways and speeds, can make them an extremely dangerous wyrm to fight. Contrary to their means of movement, Creepwyrms do not actually break blocks when digging.

It's total health is multiplied by 21, the total amount of segments they start out with.

If a segment is severed from the head, it will perish, and then the rest will follow in a chain reaction. When the severed segments die, they create explosions that can damage nearby entities, but not blocks.

It is the only wyrm entity that is completely immune to fire and all potion effects.

Strategy

Taking down the Creepwyrm is no easy task, considering their unique AI and enigmatic properties not found from any other Minecraft mod.

Arena

  • Having walls can help encourage a Creepwyrm to show more segments every time they emerge.
  • Staying higher up in the air encourages Creepwyrms to emerge at sharper angles, showing more segments.
  • Walls that are very thick (around 40 blocks) can allow the Creepwyrm to turn back out towards the player at high speeds, now having a height advantage.

Pure Vanilla

Fighting the Creepwyrm with no other mods with combat options is the toughest way to go about fighting the Creepwyrm, but is not impossible.

  • Swords work great against segments, as their sweep can hit multiple parts at once, albeit doing less damage per hit.
  • Swiftness and strength potions for the player are extremely helpful, as the key is to dodge the worm, not tank it. Sprinting with the swiftness buff makes dodging the Creepwyrm easy.
  • Glass platforms suspended in the air can help the player see the Creepwyrm below them and better respond if the Creepwyrm is emerging quickly enough to scale the height needed for the head to make contact with the player. This may buy a few seconds in a fight where (reaction) time is money
  • Arrows with a power-enchanted bow are necessary for quickly taking out the head.
  • The key to the whole fight is to aim for the head, which takes full damage from all weapons. Segments only take ~33% damage.

With Other Mods

Gear to consider, along with the aforementioned vanilla game strategy:

  • A weapon that can strike many entities at once, such as Scape and Run: Parasites' living and sentient scythe weapons.
  • Any jetpack mod for air mobility; this helps you keep a distance from the head and allows you to move in to melee the segments. Deep Mob Learning's Glitch armor and other armors that give creative flight can help as well.
  • Ranged weapons: Techguns and Modular Warfare guns work very well, and can be fired quickly enough to guarantee that one show always hits.

Loot

Creepshard 2-4
Creeped Flesh 1-3

Trivia

  • The Creepwyrm was the first mob ever to have a loot table in this mod[1].
    • This can mean that certain drops are guaranteed, even though minimal.
    • This has been removed as of v0.5.100 with the rework. Better loot is on the way.
  • Old lore had it that Creepwyrms contain Creeped Flesh because they store some of The Creeped in their bodies below ground.
    • Newer lore states that Creepwyrms are formed by underground Hive Creep growth, and are said to be thousands of Creeped mobs which merged into one.
    • The lore updated to classify them as "proto-primals," the closest the mod will get to including the Bloodwyrms.
  • Creepwyrms have two sets of sounds for when they are underground and emerged.
  • The updated design for the Creepwyrm was inspired by various leviathans from Subnautica
  • The Creepwyrm is the most optimized and performant mob in the entire mod, both for TPS and FPS
    • Tests with 20 Creepwyrms with all segments intact show no drop in TPS and FPS on a 2018 workstation
    • In Minecraft, the reason why entities (in general) lag is because of their block collision boxes. Because the Creepwyrms do not collide with blocks, only check if they are in one (to add speed)
