Worker (Wyrms of Nyrus)

"The face of the Nyral Wyrm invasion; the worker serves as the whole starting point for the construction of a hive. Mostly harmless."

Workers are a lower wyrm in the Ignoble caste in the Wyrms of Nyrus mod.

Appearance

Workers stand on four insectoid legs, and sport two arms with 3 claws on each hand. They feature opposable thumbs, explaining their ability to work with tools and materials to great extent. Pincers are located on their tails, and they have 4 eyes. Two antennae are brandished on top of them.

Abilities

Workers aren't unique, but serve as a basis for ignoble units in later mutations.

Currently, they produce metalcomb arrays, and can pick up items from the ground. It is recommended that you "feed" a worker with an object that they will hold onto if you wish to farm them for metalcombs (without killing them.)

By default, Workers are completely passive, despite being marked as a hostile mob by many other mods, like Journeymap; this is not the case if Savage AI is enabled.

Savage AI:

At phase 3 of the invasion, workers become hostile to players (as noted by their pincer tails moving around more) and will attack them. Though their attack damage may be pathetic, a swarm of workers will pick a player clean apart due to their increased armor, making them difficult to kill.

Worker farming

Workers, unlike wyrmlings, will not flee from the player or other entities, making them easier to corral by pushing. However, by phase 3 of the invasion if Savage AI is enabled, corralling workers can be very dangerous.

Once trapped in a pen, they can be given an item to hold unless if they're already holding something. Players can then use a hopper floor setup to collect metalcombs. (Pre-0.1.3)

It is noted that in version 0.1.3 and beyond, workers will detect if they are standing on hoppers and not produce any metalcombs at all, and instead let off a low-pitched hiss of dissatisfaction. They look for hoppers in a 4x4x4 cube around them. Sometimes, workers will "unionize" and turn hostile, regardless of if Savage AI is enabled or not.

More creative (and careful, if Savage AI is enabled) methods will be needed to futureproof metalcomb farms.

Role in the Hive

Workers are general-purpose drones within the hive, filling in three roles:

  • Resource carrier
  • Metalcomb synthesizer
  • Improvised defenses

Workers are the more passive wyrms of the hive, preferring to only attack when explicitly threatened; however, it is not uncommon to find them on the front lines of the invasion when The Empress calls for them.
