Warriors (Wyrms of Nyrus)

From SNAZpedia
A simplified design of the Warrior

The Warrior is a warrior caste wyrm in Wyrms of Nyrus. Characterized by large forearms and wing-like extremities, the Warrior is capable of sustaining long periods of flight, though it is not exactly built for ground movement. It is the first Wyrm with air-to-water animations and capabilities.

Lore

Warriors were one of the first modern wyrm units designed for planets which featured many floating structures and/or landscapes. They specifically originate from the assault on the Calasvan Unity's homeworld, displacing them into becoming a voidborne society. Their hooked tail was a later modification that made them able to hook onto Shibuniis and transport those assimilated into the hivemind into combat zones.

The forearms of the Warrior are long and have 3 fingers each, but the legs were atrophied because the Warriors rarely walked. However, if grounded or otherwise stuck on land, the large arms aided with surface mobility and climbing.

Behavior

This wyrm can ground-rush enemies, as well as do swooping attacks when in the air.

The Warrior attacks the following, in this order of priority, while also respecting configured target settings (unlike Probers):

  • Anything that attacks it first
  • Players (Senses through walls)
  • Villagers
  • Animals
  • Mobs

Warriors have good speed on land and in air, and move in bursts. They can dodge enemy attacks and charge straight at targets.

Strategy

While the Warrior may be considered "Sapient," it can not predict enemy movements. Simple dodging by strafing or sprinting works very well against the Warrior's attacks. However, keep in mind that at the same time, the Warrior will also dodge the player's attacks. Additionally, high-knockback weapons can knock away Warriors easily when they are in the air, however, strategies must change when dealing with Tainted Warriors.

Trivia

  • Warriors were the second wyrm unit type to be given variants.
    • In v0.4 INDEV-AMALGAM, Warriors were the first to have the Calamity variant.
  • They are the fourth airborne wyrm added into the mod.
  • Warriors had a completely different flying animation before the 0.3 series.
    • "I changed it because the old flying animation looked clunky and awkward; how could it move its wings slowly, yet hover in the air?" - Modrome, April 2023
  • The Warrior AI had been rewritten a total of 9 times before it was functional; this has earned it the infamous name of 9-Failed fox amongst Modrome and their boss.
    • Many times, the AI pathfinding would get confused and get stuck in place. The 10th revision was when the AI didn't get stuck as often as all the other revisions did, and was used.
    • One the 6th revision, Warriors would not have a damage hitbox that functioned at all, and the 7th revision had a hitbox that reached up to 7 blocks away.
    • The 3rd revision tried to have the AI update between grounded and airborne states. Unfortunately, it would not choose to fly at all despite the conditions all being met.
